According to Wikipedia, the gin was developed in the Caribbean by Dr. Patrick Manson, a Scottish physician, in the mid-1920s. The original recipe called for gin and tonic water mixed with a grapefruit puree. It became popular throughout the Caribbean in the 1950s and was first sold by the Tropicana chain of hotels in the late 1960s. In the mid-1970s, Tropicana added a sparkling wine version of the cocktail.

The grapefruit puree was developed by a French chef, Jean-Pierre Héron in the 1980s, and has been a popular ingredient in cocktails ever since. It’s a mixture of fresh grapefruit and water, which is poured into a blender, then spun in the blender’s counter-top machine. After the puree is spun, the water is poured back into the blender to create an emulsion, and the cocktail is ready to drink.
